She left her water jar.

That’s the detail that gets me every time I read this story.

The woman at the well came to draw water. That’s why she was there. She needed water. It was the middle of the day, it was hot, and she had a job to do.

But after her conversation with Jesus, she leaves the water jar behind and runs back to town.

She forgets why she came. She forgets what she needed. Because she’s encountered something—someone—more important.

That’s what transformation looks like.

It’s not just a slight adjustment. It’s not just becoming a slightly better version of yourself. It’s a fundamental reorientation. It’s leaving behind what you thought you needed and running toward something new.

The woman at the well came hiding. She left proclaiming.
She came in shame. She left in freedom.
She came alone. She left inviting others.

And here’s what I want you to notice: Jesus didn’t fix her life. He didn’t undo her past. He didn’t make her five husbands disappear. He didn’t change her circumstances.

He changed her.

He saw her. He spoke to her. He offered her living water. And that was enough.

Grace doesn’t always change our circumstances. But grace always changes us.

Sometimes transformation is dramatic—like the woman at the well, running back to town, leaving everything behind.

Sometimes transformation is quiet—a slow shift in how we see ourselves, how we see God, how we see the world.

But either way, it’s real. And it’s grace.

So here’s my prayer for us this week:

God, transform us. Not because we’re broken beyond repair, but because you’re making us new. Help us leave behind what we thought we needed and run toward what you’re offering. Give us the courage to be changed. Amen.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Travis
