Advent is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s that stretch when we prepare for something big—Christ’s birth. But it’s also a time when we reflect on what’s behind us and wonder about what’s ahead. In many ways, it’s about endings and beginnings all rolled together.

Think about Mary, waiting for her baby to arrive. She lived in a world full of turmoil. Big changes were happening in her life—huge ones. Political powers were at odds, and ordinary people like her bore the brunt of it. And yet, in the middle of it all, she held onto hope. She trusted in a God who was making things new, even when life felt uncertain.

That feels familiar, doesn’t it? We’ve all had times when life felt out of balance. Maybe you’re there right now. But Advent gives us a chance to pause. To take a deep breath and remember that God’s love holds us steady, no matter what.

This year, our Advent theme invites us to step into this season like we’re opening a new chapter. Each week, we’ll focus on blessings and truths that remind us what matters most. These aren’t just ideas for kids to hear in Sunday school. They’re the kind of lessons we adults need to hear, too. Things like: you are deeply loved. Hope is never out of reach. And beginnings, even the scary ones, can be beautiful.

Sometimes, these blessings might sound like things you’d say at a wedding or a baptism. They’re simple, yet powerful, words to live by. They help us stay grounded, like finding a flashlight when the power goes out.

Here’s my favorite part: love is at the center of it all. God’s love. Christ’s birth is proof of that. It’s the kind of love that shows up, even in the darkest corners. It’s the kind of love that gives us the courage to start fresh.

So, as we move through Advent together, I want you to think of it as a journey. Not a race. Not a competition. Just a step-by-step walk toward Christmas. Along the way, I hope you’ll find words that speak to your heart. Words that remind you who you are and whose you are.

You are loved. You are not alone. And whatever this new season brings, love is your beginning. I can’t wait to see you at worship and to share these blessings with you. Let’s step into this season with hope. Together.
